When focusing on human development, individuation can be simply defined as a process of forming a stable personality. As a person ‘individuates’, they gain a clearer sense of self that is separate from their parents and other individuals in the society. Individuation was a term proposed by the late Carl Jung.
Developing some form of individuation creates a separate identity which is an salient goal of adolescence, but it is a continuation process throughout a person’s life.
Carl Jung suggested that this was a self-realisation process. Throughout life, people are prone to losing touch with particular factors of their true selves. Through individuation, they are able to integrate these factors of themselves with all of their old and new experiences they have acquired in their designated environments.
Through what I have learnt theoretically individuation is dealt with during individual therapy for people who cannot live without others and do things on their own as individuals, and through therapy they could learn more about themselves and what they are capable of since everybody is unique in their own way, and most importantly learning how to express their emotions and communicating their needs and wants with others, identifying negative thoughts in their lives and developing certain skills to figure out their own personal identities.
Those who understand themselves possess these internal qualities:they seek privacy and deal with things on their own, focus on themselves more than other individuals, rebel against the family or cultural norms, and they also personalise their appearance which may not be accepted socially.
The significant signs which are present if people do not go through the process of individuation are anxiety, depression, lack of boundaries, lack of self-awareness,low satisfaction with one’s life, low self-worth,problems with motivation and goal-setting, poor decision making, poor self-esteem, and self-doubt.
All in all people should know who they are, because individuals are also important before anything else in their ‘own’ worlds.
